The Flying Oms – Vocal & String duo Extraordinaire! is an eclectic and spirited musical ensemble led by world-class violinists Rob Diggins and Jolianne Einem. With a dynamic mix of violins, viola, guitar, and vocals, they explore a rich tapestry of sounds that spans continents and centuries. Drawing from a wide array of musical traditions—including original Celtic tunes by Rob, Eastern European folk music, Jazz Manouche, Klezmer, Appalachian and Old-Time fiddle, Gypsy music, English Country Dances, Baroque arrangements, Delta Blues, Indie String Pop, and String Jazz—The Flying Oms bring an innovative twist to these timeless genres.
Their performances are a joyful blend of the old and the new, infusing classical structures with a fresh, free-spirited energy that calls to mind the laid-back, vibrant spirit of 1960s and 70s Topanga Canyon. Picture the intimate charm of chamber music drifting from a sun-dappled deck overhanging Topanga Creek, where every note dances with subtle freedom, sometimes catching a breeze of that hip, funky chic, folk influence that defined Topanga's golden era—and carrying with it the kind of soulful inventiveness that seamlessly blends sophistication with an easygoing, bohemian edge. The Flying Oms create an experience that feels at once timeless and alive, bridging musical eras and cultures with an adventurous, inviting spirit.
Their sound invites both contemplation and movement—whether you're swaying to a sultry Jazz groove or tapping your foot to a lively Eastern European folk tune, it's clear that The Flying Oms have mastered the art of making complex music feel both accessible and joyful. Their performances are as danceable as they are captivating, guaranteed to entertain, inspire, and leave you with a smile. Join us for an unforgettable musical experience, where the magic of the past meets the vibrant creativity of the present.

Violinist Jolianne Einem enjoys her travels from her home in Trinidad California, leaving her garden and home projects behind, to cultivate her relationship with the HIP (Historically Informed Performance) world of music. She studied violin with Alex Treger at UCLA, Alice Schoenfeld at USC, and with English Baroque violinist Monica Huggett, who inspired her passion for early music. She toured internationally with Monica Huggett’s Trio Sonnerie, and Hausmusik, as well as Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman. Her musical travels have taken her through Europe, South America, India, Asia and Canada. Einem is a featured member of San Francisco’s acclaimed Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra in Oregon, and the Festival Orchestra of the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar. She also performs with groups such as Live Oak Baroque Orchestra in Sonoma, and Cantata Collective in the Bay Area, and collaborates with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Rob Diggins, in Les Conversations Galantes and The Flying Oms, where together they explore a wide-ranging repertoire across multiple genres, including originals. Jolianne performs locally in Northern California with LodeStar, on electric bass/vocals, and with songwriter Joanne Rand, on mandolin/vocals, and is director of Westhaven Center for the Arts, producing Trinidad Art Nights.
Jolianne is featured on Portland Baroque Orchestra’s recording of J.S. Bach: Concertos for One, Two and Three Violins, and her many other recordings include: Mendelssohn Octet with Hausmusik (EMI), Early Music of the Netherlands with Trio Sonnerie (Emergo), Venice Before Vivaldi with El Mundo (Koch), Eighteenth Century Music for Lute and Strings with Trio Galanterie (Audioquest), 18th-Century Concerti with Archetti (Centaur Records), and Flower Fairies (Music for Little People).

During the 2025–26 season, Rob Diggins performs as a soloist and principal player with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, showcasing both the violin and the viola d’amore. He will also collaborate with Musica Angelica, Musica Transalpina, Live Oak Baroque, and the Sonoma Bach Choir. In addition, Rob will teach online through Teach To Learn’s Culture Connect program and perform at farmers markets, craft fairs, weddings, and other special occasions alongside his life partner and colleague Jolianne Einem as part of their duo, The Flying Oms–String Duo Plus!
Rob appears on violin and cornet on Jarvis Lamoreux’s album, Never The Same, and on synthviolin and cornet for March Adstrum’s albums Relics from Phantoms and Veins, Vines and Cables. His extensive discography includes classical recordings featuring solo work on Portland Baroque Orchestra’s recording of J.S. Bach’s complete string concertos with Monica Huggett; various Bach masterpieces with Collegium Vocale, Ghent, and La Chapelle Royale, under the direction of Philippe Herreweghe; and Baroque concertos with Jed Wentz’s ensemble Musica ad Rhenum.
Born in Santa Monica and raised in Topanga Canyon during the 1960s, Rob credits this formative experience for his lifelong dedication to and advocacy for holistic healing, the non-violent communication process, organic food production, the preservation and restoration of the Earth’s ecosystems, mediation through diplomacy, and his commitment to teaching both music and yoga as acts of devotion.
